Car performance test benches

The Roller Bench, also known as an integrated bench or road simulator, tests the functionality of the vehicle’s key performance features by simulating normal road driving.

Commercial vehicle performance test benches

The Roller Bench or road simulator, tests the functionality of the vehicle’s key performance features by simulating normal road driving.

A range of measurements of truck performance can be taken on this bench. These range from simple warm-up to acceleration-braking cycles, maximum speed, gearbox check, braking system check with check of devices such as ABS, ASR, ESP, etc., to the power transmitted to the wheels and torque distribution on vehicles with multiple drive axles.

The average test time is around ten minutes, but of course this depends on the type and number of tests to be performed.

Although it has an architecture similar to that of the integrated bench for cars (one vector motor for each wheel), it is not advisable to carry out maximum braking force measurements, as the forces involved are very high and would require the use of very powerful electric motors.

Please see the brake tester benches for brake force measurements.

Using a PC and a variety of sensors, it is possible to measure, certify and advise on performance in accordance with the vehicle’s production specifications.

Car wheel alignment benches

Complete systems for measuring and adjusting wheel angles by finding the perfect settings for the vehicle.

Precision is ensured by a system of four high-resolution 3D laser-beam cameras for accurate wheel control.

Set-up and alignment can be performed in both automatic and manual modes, including torque checks.

Loading and unloading of vehicles can be done either automatically or manually, depending on production requirements.

The toe pit has multiple uses beyond adjusting toe.

Today, a modern toe pit can be used for:

  • measurement and adjustment of all characteristic wheel alignment angles
  • measurement and adjustment of front toe with respect to the symmetry axis and thrust axis
  • headlight adjustment (low beam, high beam, fog light) of conventional, halogen, xenon or LED type (fixed focus or variable geometry)
  • calibration of ADAS devices (front cameras, front medium and long distance radars, ultrasonic sensors)
  • calibration of head-up display (projects main navigation information onto windscreen)

Commercial vehicle wheel alignment benches

The toe pit for trucks has different characteristics from that designed for cars because of the increased size and weight of vehicles, but it still has the same variety of uses.

Today, a modern truck toe pit can be used for:

  • measurement and adjustment of all characteristic wheel alignment angles, including the alignment of the various steering axles;
  • the front toe can be measured and adjusted with respect to the symmetry or thrust axis (dog tracking) (axis measured according to the orientation of the main drive axle or the average of several axles or … )
  • adjustments can be:
  • manual or automatic
  • with or without torque control at tightening
  • with or without load simulation
  • headlight adjustment (both low beam, high beam and fog lights). Headlights can be conventional, halogen, xenon or LED (both fixed focus and variable geometry);
  • calibration of ADAS devices, (front and rear cameras, short-, medium- and long-distance radars (front and rear), ultrasonic sensors;
  • calibration of head-up display (projects main navigation information onto windscreen).

All measured data can be certified and approved in accordance with the vehicle’s production specifications.

    • horizontal deviation
    • vertical deviation
    • maximum light intensity
  • Calibration of ADAS devices using appropriate reference targets. Targets can be operated manually or automatically by robotic arms.

The truck toe pit relies on the movement of the two rear cameras to centre themselves in front of each individual rear wheel.

If the truck has a double front axle then the front cameras also move to face each wheel. This system can also be equipped with several camera pairs to reduce the cycle time.

Available adjustments can be divided into three macro-groups:

Measuring wheel alignment angles

  • a set of four 3D cameras each assisted by laser beams capable of fully mapping the wheel, allows perfect spatial identification of each wheel of the vehicle. The recognition of the wheel within its own reference system then determines the measurement of all the characteristic angles that make up the car wheel alignment.
  • for vehicles with more than four axles, the camera pairs move on precision rails to recognise and measure all wheels, axle by axle.
  • a PLC can manage the entire test cycle.
  • a computer manages the measured data, compares them to reference values, stores and/or prints them out.
  • a set of turntables with rollers is used to measure ROC (Run Out Compensation).
  • screwdrivers, torque wrenches and/or robot arms for adjusting and tightening shims can also be added.

Headlight measurement

The headlight measurement and adjustment section uses, in addition to the PLC and PC already used for toe measurements, one or two optical cameras capable of simulating the projection of the headlight beam at 10m (legal regulations). A digital camera detects the headlight beam and analyses its vertical, horizontal and intensity aspects. This gives a complete analysis of the headlight.

A motorised gantry with two or more axes brings the optical camera into position in front of the vehicle’s individual headlights.

ADAS device calibration

These devices are now an integral and vital part of most modern vehicles, and there are many types, each with its own functional test and calibration methodology.

These range from ultrasonic sonar for assisted parking, to radar with collision avoidance features, to individual cameras for managing the vehicle position in relation to the road, to integrated camera groups for optimal manoeuvring management, to …

For each type of sensor/device, specific test/calibration technologies are offered, all in accordance with the specifications of the various manufacturers.

One of our EOBD interfaces is able to dialogue with all the ECUs of the vehicle under test to activate functional checks and correct calibration procedures.

Fume extraction in the pit

The extraction system is tailor-made to the customer’s needs and extracts air from the pit where the operator is working or, in some cases, adds a slight overpressure to the pit itself, effectively preventing the vehicle’s exhaust fumes from entering during measurement.

The components used are in accordance with the customer’s Vendor List.

Headlight tester gantry

The headlight tester gantry is a key part of wheel alignment benches, although it can also be used independently.

It is combined with this equipment for two practical reasons:

  • The vehicle is in a known and repeatable position on the wheel alignment bench;
  • The headlight adjustment time does not affect the cycle time because it is done in parallel with the wheel adjustment.
  • Labour savings as performed in the toe cycle time.

As soon as the vehicle has been prepared for toe adjustments, the optical headlight measurement camera moves in front of a vehicle headlight and starts measuring its parameters, such as intensity, distribution, horizontal and vertical beam deviation.

When all parameters are within the set tolerances, the optical camera automatically switches to the next light.

It is possible to measure and/or adjust all the front headlights of a vehicle (low beam, high beam, fog light, etc.).

Headlights can be adjusted manually (the operator turns the adjustment screws manually) or automatically (electric screwdrivers make the adjustments autonomously).

With this equipment, combined with a PC, it is possible to measure, display and check that the measurements carried out conform to the required specifications and record them to keep on file for the future.

Features

  • Headlight measurement means being able to measure and adjust the position of each of the vehicle’s front headlights: low beam, high beam and fog lights.

Measurements performed

  • The measurement of the light beam is broken down into its different components:
    • vertical deviation (high/low)
    • horizontal (left/right)
    • light intensity
    • beam distribution

ADAS

(Advanced Driver Assistance System)

The ADAS gantry is used for calibrating all sensors involved in the ADAS functions of a vehicle.

  • integrated in wheel alignment systems
  • installed as autonomous stations

The gantry is made up of:

  • a system that can place the different calibration targets in the appropriate positions.
  • target position management software for different vehicle versions.
